Cruising along a canal and admiring the beautiful
scenery might seem like the only thing to do on your narrow boat holiday,
but there’s plenty more besides. As you travel Britain’s
canal network you will come across opportunities to spot wildlife,
explore towns, sample local cuisine, walk through untouched areas
of countryside and much more.
So whether you’re after something action packed
or relaxing here are some ideas to help you get the most out of your
narrow boat holiday.
With over 4000 miles of waterways in Britain you
are spoilt for choice on how to explore them. Why not swap your narrow
boat for a bike for a day and cycle the towpath and surrounding landscape.
Most cycle routes are well signposted and take you
through beautiful stretches of British countryside and into small
towns packed full of history and shopping opportunities.
Some towpaths require a cycle permit so it’s
worth checking before you start your narrow boat holiday to see if
one’s required.
It is great take a break from steering along the
canal and stretch your legs on an early evening stroll after mooring
for the evening. You’ll soon find any worries and cares slipping
away as you take in the peace and quiet of the canal.
Or if you fancy something a little bit more challenging
try a longer day hike along the towpath and through surrounding countryside
following one of the well marked rambling routes.
What can be better than choosing the perfect spot
on the bank of a quiet canal to try your hand at fishing. Canals are
home to many different species of fish and you can hope to catch carp,
roach, tench, barbel and pike.
If you fancy fishing, don’t forget that you
will need a rod licence from the environment agency before you go.
The sides of canals are dotted with places of historical
interest marking changes in the use of canals as well as being a record
of a developing Britain. Step back in time and explore castles, churches,
monasteries and factories all within easy reach canals.
Canals pass through areas of outstanding natural
beauty and untouched countryside, perfect for keeping an eye out for
some of Britain’s more rarely spotted animals. If you’re
lucky you might find yourself face to face with kingfishers, otters
and water voles.
What could be a better way to end the day than by
relaxing with friends or loved ones with a drink and meal in one of
many of the pubs and restaurants that line the canal? Whether you’re
looking for pub grub or an a la carte extravaganza you’ll be
able to find something to suit your taste.
So moor up, order yourself a cold pint of the local
ale and watch the cares of the world float on by.
