Terms and conditions
Please note:
- All references to TILLERMAN within these conditions refer to TILLERMAN BOATS Ltd.
- All times quoted refer to Greenwich Mean Time GMT.
The following Terms and Conditions together with the general information provided on the TILLERMAN website and the TILLERMAN brochure form the basis of your agreement with TILLERMAN. Before you make a booking, please make sure you have read this agreement carefully and accept all conditions numbered 1 to 11 as stated.
1. The crew
- Canal cruising is an activity holiday and includes negotiating locks, which are heavy and potentially dangerous. For safety considerations there are constraints on the ages of the crew who must all be fit and able.
- If you are the person named on the TILLERMAN Booking Form you must be a minimum of 25 years of age.
- If you are the person named on the TILLERMAN Booking Form you will be responsible for the boat and its crew.
- Your second in command must be more than 18 years old.
- If you have any doubts about your crew make up then please call TILLERMAN on FREEPHONE 0800 389 8004.
2. Internet booking and payment
- When you have chosen your preferred Marina, Boat and confirmed that the dates for your holiday are available please follow the simple instructions on our booking form.
- If you are paying by credit card on the web site your booking will be automatically confirmed by email.
- If you prefer not to provide your credit card details online then please call our FREEPHONE 0800 389 8004 and our booking department will be pleased to process the payment on the telephone.
- Please note that there are no extra charges for paying by credit card.
3. Telephone booking and payment
- If you would prefer to book on the telephone please call FREEPHONE 0800 389 8004 and our booking department will be pleased to confirm availability, take credit card payment, make your booking and advise you on any aspect of your holiday.
- You will be given a Booking Reference Number that you should quote in all future communications.
- Your booking will be confirmed by post.
4. Postal booking and payment
- If you prefer to pay by cheque then you should fill in your booking form quoting your Booking Reference Number.
- Please ensure you also write your Booking Reference Number on the on the back of your cheque.
- Your Booking Form and cheque should be sent to

Devon, EX9 7ZN. - Your booking will be reserved for ten days whilst the payment is clearing after which your booking will be confirmed by post.
5. Payment
- The holiday price is the price quoted in either the latest TILLERMAN BROCHURE or on the TILLERMAN website.
- The holiday price quoted is a fully inclusive cost and includes fuel, gas, linen, laundry, cleaning, breakage, breakdown repairs, insurance, car parking and training.
- Please note that there are no extras to pay.
- If you make your booking within 12 weeks of your holiday departure date the holiday prices is payable in full
- If you make a booking more than 12 weeks before your holiday departure date we will require a deposit of 25% of the total balance.
- All payments should be made to the favour of TILLERMAN Boats Ltd.
6. Cancellation
- If for any reason you have to cancel your booking at any time before 12 weeks of the holiday date TILLERMAN will refund all monies paid less a fixed charge of £100.00 to cover administration costs, and commissions paid, if any, to a booking agent.
- If for any reason you cancel your booking within 12 weeks of the holiday date TILLERMAN will retain the full holiday price paid by you. No refund will be made.
- If for any reason beyond our control TILLERMAN has to cancel your booking then TILLERMAN will refund the full Holiday price paid.
- The hirer accepts at time of booking that such payment is full and final and agrees that no further claim will be made.
7. The marina
- If for reasons beyond our control the marina you have selected for your holiday become unavailable TILLERMAN reserves the right to change the location of your holiday to another marina.
- In this unlikely event TILLERMAN will contact you and give you as much notice as possible.
- FREE car parking is provided at each marina at the risk of the owner.
- TILLERMAN or the marina owner accepts NO liability for loss or damage to either the vehicle or its contents.
- Your personal effects are not insured by for loss or damage and you are advised not to leave any items of value in your car.
8. The Boat
- Your canal boat will be a maximum of five years old as generally described on the TILLERMAN website. The boat will be cleaned to a high standard, fuelled and serviced with bedding on board including towels and tea towels.
- A four berth canal boat is 45ft long and the sleeping accommodation will comprise a king size bed in the master cabin. In addition there is a double make up bed in the lounge area, which has to be made up and closed down daily by the crew to allow the lounge area to be used for its designated purpose.
- A six-berth canal boat is 55ft long and in addition to the above includes two narrow single beds in a middle cabin with the addition of an extra toilet for privacy.
9. The holiday
- When you arrive at the marina you will be required to read and sign a cruising agreement, which contains additional information relating to your holiday.
- A Waterways Code of Conduct prepared by British Waterways will be available on your boat for information.
- Non-compliance with this Waterways Code of Conduct will be considered a breach of your agreement with TILLERMAN.
- If you breach the Waterways Code of Conduct in anyway TILLERMAN reserve the right to terminate your holiday immediately and no claim for damages will be entertained.
- You will be required to pay a refundable damage deposit of £300 to the Marina on arrival to protect against wilful damage or any non-compliance with your agreement with TILLERMAN.
- This deposit will be refunded at the end of your holiday provided the boat and its contents are left in the same condition as at the start of your holiday. It is a condition of the hire that the boat is left in a reasonably clean condition with no dirty dishes left.
- In extreme cases there will be additional charge of £75 will be deducted from the deposit if the boat is left dirty, this charge is at the sole discretion of TILLERMAN.
- Arrival later than 1600hrs will require that you stay overnight at the marina and be specially trained the following day.
- The marina is closed on Sunday and if it is necessary to train you on Sunday due to your late arrival there will be an additional charge of £50.00.
- You will be in complete charge of the boat and are responsible for its safe navigation.
- In the event of an accident, you must notify us at once with full details and names and addresses of witnesses. IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANYONE ADMIT ANY LIABILITY.
10. Check in and check out times
- The boat will be ready for you at 1400hrs on the start day of your holiday. Sometimes the boats are ready earlier and you are welcome to arrive after 1100hrs and hopefully get away early or join us for a coffee break whilst waiting for the boat.
- For a seven or fourteen night holiday the boat must be returned by 0930hrs on the last day of your holiday.
- For a three or four night holiday the boat must be returned by 1600hrs on the last day of your holiday.
- TILLERMAN will retain £100 as a liquidated damage, should the boat be returned later than the specified time.
11. Other information
- Nothing in these terms and conditions affects your Statutory Rights.
- Pets are not allowed except at Alvecote Marina and subject to written agreement by Tillerman.
- Please read this document carefully as they set out the respective rights and obligations of each party.
- Please note that the Tillerman boats website cannot be used to redeem vouchers.
- TILLERMAN reserves the right to refuse any booking without notice and any monies paid will be refunded in full.
